9/19/18 UPDATE: Gone
This 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo (VIN WP0AB29992S686915 ) has a claimed 31,000 miles and is finished in Seal Gray over Black leather. The seller states, “Owned this car for the last 10 years and has been a great car, but the time has come to move onto something else.” Remember, no IMS/RMS work needed with the Turbos as they lack the IMS bearing design. Find this one offered here on CarGurus in Denver, Colorado for $50,500.
2001 saw the introduction of the 996 Turbo. On the exterior the Turbo body was widened 65mm at the rear and a new moving rear wing was designed to improve lift busting. The seller states that the wing is inoperable (pretty common actually) and is in a fixed height position. Be aware, this is a pretty costly fix at the dealership.
The front-end was redesigned with a new bumper designed for better road holding and downforce and the lights were reworked after all the complaining customers did because the 911 couldn’t be distinguished from the “pedestrian” Boxster.
This Turbo is sporting some aftermarket HRE wheels and a Bilstein PSS9 suspension. The car appears to sport it’s stock aluminum Brembo “Big Red” Calipers, 330mm (13″) discs. The seller states he does have the stock Turbo II’s that came with the car.
The stock 996 Turbo sports the M96/70 twin-turbo charged, DOHC engine good for 420 HP with updated VariocamPlus and DME. Porsche couldn’t fit the intercooler on top of the engine, like in previous iterations, so it was split into two and mounted on each side of the engine. The cooling is supplied through the ducts to the rear of the doors (thus widebody). That being said, this 996 Turbo is equipped with the rare Factory X50 package. The x50 brough bigger Turbos (K24 vs K16), larger intercoolers a beefed up tranny and an ECU tune which gets horsepower up to 450hp. Seller states cooling lines have been pinned and the 2nd gear popout has been addressed (also common early 996 Turbo issues).
The interior is finished in black with the full leather treatment and a 3 spoke leather steering wheel.
These 996 Turbos offer exotic levels of performance for not much money these days. The x50 package does command a premium (was $18K option when new), and although the seller states this cars engine was replaced by porsche, we still think its under priced relative to the market. These x50’s command $60K plus on the open market (go check out BaT’s recent sales). If you want your first flat-six to be the Turbo variety, this looks like one worth inquiring about. Ask for a Carfax/Autocheck and don’t forget that PPI!
